ANITA QUAN
BASICS
Character Name: Lady
Secret Identity Name if Applicable: Anita Quan
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Group (Hero, Villain, Anti-Hero, Civilian): Anti-Hero
CHARACTER BUILD-UP
General Appearance/Physical Appearance:
Lady has short black hair, straight as a comb and shiny. She has a face to match, with dark eyes, sharp facial features and the faint beginnings of wrinkles. She stands relatively tall at 5’7 and has a long, lanky build. Usually, Lady sports a long pair of white dress pants and a black long-sleeved shirt with a subtle V-neck. When out in the field, she trades in her business casual look for a long-sleeved black underarmour shirt and black tactical pants. Rarely, peeks of dark swirling ink tattooed on her skin can be spotted from underneath the hems of her clothes, but the full design is never on display.
Played By: Generic Middle Aged Asian Woman
Personality:
Lady isn’t the loud sort. Nor is she the obnoxious, proactive or truly ethical sort. She’s the type to sit back, watch the world burn and smoke a cigarette. If it benefits her, she might save a few from the flames. She rarely makes a deal that doesn’t benefit her in some way. Her mind works at a distance from the people around her. Lady will watch, wait, store away important information and then never let on that she has it all while carrying on conversation. There is an air of relaxed indifference about her that disguises a sharp mind with keen intuition. She’s got just enough apathy to be dangerous and just enough conscience to be helpful.
Skills/Abilities/Weapons/Powers:
Tattoo Manifestation:
Common Rat: Quick and able to fit into small spaces. Lady can see through its eyes, hear through its ears, smell through its nose, and direct its actions. The rat is used most often for spying or surveillance. As rats are a common sight, it rarely rouses suspicion.
Black Mamba: A black mamba in the wild can deliver enough venom to kill 25 men. It can strike faster than Usain Bolt can outrun it (9-12 mph). The black mamba can bite up to 12 times in one attack. Of course, that’s the height, not the average of what the Black Mama can achieve. At the moment, Lady’s snake does what the average Black Mamba does. It injects 1-1.8 grains of venom, bites once unless provoked into multiple bites and can kill a man on average from 30 minutes to 3 hours. With medical attention, the majority survive will the bite of a black mamba. She largely uses her snake for assassinations and intimidation.
Jian Kang Shou: The Chinese characters for health and longevity. The combination of these characters have, so far, prevented Lady from bleeding out or developing any complications that would shorten her lifespan. Her connection to words is less powerful than to that of animals. Even still, she can completely heal a gunshot within a week, prevent herself from bleeding out and triage herself as long as the injury isn’t life threateningly severe.
Tattoo Manipulation:
Once manifested, Lady can direct the abilities of what she has manifested through nonspecific impulse. She cannot send verbally specific or premeditated directions ahead of time in the way that humans do. Rather, Lady can take hold of the reins of the animals instincts. She can send the desire to go to a certain area, pay attention to certain things and strike at certain times. It is also through this ability that Lady can direct her healing ability to a specific wound or more generally direct it through her whole body.
Connected:
Lady has cultivated a book of favours and associates that she can call in on. Need to smuggle a machine gun into prison? Talk to Lady. Need blueprints for a government facility? Talk to Lady. Need a group of ten badgers that can balance on each other while collectively wearing a trench coat? Don’t ask. But do talk to Lady. She won’t judge you. Verbally.
Combat:
Lady is not excellent at combat but she is proficient. She knows enough to get through an altercation by disabling or distracting her opponent(s) long enough to get away. Lady can also fire a pistol very well and has had some success with rifles in the past. Her knife work is decent at best, she’s usually an inch or two off her target. But when you’re aiming for a whole human chest, an inch or two usually doesn’t matter.
Strategy:
If you’ve ever used a single rat to gather intel about the complex overseas shipping operation of a rival drug dealer and used it to topple their empire, then you know there is a certain amount of luck, creativity and strategy in that feat. Lady’s powers aren’t always obviously useful at first, but with a mind for strategy honed by years of experience, Lady finds a way. And it doesn’t end there. A couple powerful people owe Lady favours and others know to leave her alone. That doesn’t come without the ability to occasionally outmaneuver the minds of those who play power games.
In all of her additional skills, Lady isn’t the best. She’s usually juuust good enough.
Weaknesses:
Her tattoos have the constitution of their natural form. They are not particularly, fast, strong, or intelligent. They cannot talk, they cannot return to ink at will and are just as easy to kill as their natural counterparts. When the animals are killed they will slowly reappear on Lady's arm. The process can take anywhere from a day to a week. Usually this pisses Lady off. Which may or may not, usually not, be a wise idea. If Lady loses control of her tattoo manifestations for whatever reason, they do not return to her skin immediately and will roam around until she regains their connection.
Lady herself has no incredible constitution, speed, strength or psyche. She can only control her tattoos through instinct, which disqualifies animals with more complex thought (lions, dolphins, apes). Controlling her tattoos can take some concentration depending on the job. If it’s just a spying job, it’s easy for her to passively take in the information from the animal and still be very aware of her surroundings. If it’s something like a careful assassination, she is at best vaguely aware of what’s going on around her. Over time, Lady has been able to sense when danger to herself is imminent regardless of what she is doing with her tattoo animals, but to avoid said danger she must break her connection with her tattoo. It can take days to mentally track the animal.
History:
Everybody who's worth knowing knows the name Lady. She seemed to materialize in the underground scene about ten years ago, when she was still in her twenties. She agreed to pretty much any job for the right price, building her connections. With a career built on getting people to owe her favours, Anita situated herself as a prominent figure in the shadier sides of town. Mostly she keeps to herself, doesn’t make big splashes and enforces only two rules. No kids. No refunds.
Life before her debut in the less than savory life was relatively normal. Anita’s parents were good people who raised their child well. There was no horrific abuse or parental absenteeism that caused Anita to pick the path she did. It was simply a case of bad things happening to good people. Anita’s father was an immigrant from China who came to America through the citizenship lottery and married her mother, a school teacher. Anita watched her mother struggle with a school system that prioritized letters on a piece of paper rather than the children that earned them. It never mattered how brilliant or professional her father was in his job as a structural engineer, the second people heard his accent it was assumed he couldn’t speak English well, ate rice at every meal and couldn’t drive. Nonetheless, Anita was a dutiful daughter. She was quiet, got good grades and never got herself into trouble she couldn’t get out of. When she went to college, Anita graduated four years later with a bachelors in social justice, not because she wanted to help those who were taken advantage of by ‘the system’ but because she wanted to understand how to slip through the cracks of a system that didn’t care about her and begin life in a world with rules she could understand.
It was also in college that Anita got her first tattoo. It was a rat, which represented the Chinese zodiac she was born under. Curiously, the ink from the tattoo seemed to react with the genes in her cells, giving life to the rat. Anita could see through its eyes, direct its actions with her own instinct, and absorb it back into her when she was done. It was in this newfound power that Anita saw her chance to escape from the system. Now she had the means to make a living in the lands of mercenaries, loan sharks and criminals. The first thing Anita did after earning her diploma was get a tattoo of a black mamba snake on her left arm.
The first few years earning a name for herself on the streets were rough. Anita was used diversely, sent to shake people up for unpaid debts, spy on the operations of drug dealing competition and kill the right person when necessary. During these years Anita got her third tattoo, the Chinese characters for health and longevity. It was hard to go to the emergency room for a stab wound when you started and finished the fight. She was mocked for her higher morals, which were hovering somewhere between that of the average citizen and the people who hired her. Eventually, she earned the nickname Lady for her ‘manners’. It wasn’t long after the emergence of her nickname that Lady called in a few key favours and set up her own operation. Now, word on the street is that if you visit a certain bar, or its allied tattoo parlor, you can request to speak to the owner, who might entertain you special services.
